Juan Mata Ortiz was a major in the army of the state of Chihuahua. He was a participant in the not-so-publicized genocide against the Apaches and other Indigeous groups at the hands of both the Mexican and the United States armies in the border territories. The major was killed by Ju, one of the last Apache chiefs in the region.
